GOVERNOR YUSUF URGES MEDIA COMMENTATORS TO PRIORITIZE STATE INTEREST AND UPHOLD PUBLIC DECENCY
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on political programme presenters and media commentators to prioritize the interest of Kano State and serve as ambassadors of dignity, unity, and religious harmony in their public discourse.
The Governor made this call during the closing ceremony of a two-day sensitization workshop organized for political programme presenters and media commentators by the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Governor Yusuf lauded the initiative to bring together media voices from diverse backgrounds, acknowledging their significant role in communicating the realities on the ground and offering constructive guidance to the government.
He emphasized the responsibility of all stakeholders—including parents, traditional rulers, community leaders, clerics, and citizens—to protect the image of the state and promote values that strengthen social cohesion and religious tolerance.
The Governor also expressed gratitude to the Gauta Club for the Award of Honour presented to him, describing it as a gesture of encouragement for good governance and inclusive engagement.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, commended the participants for their active cooperation, which contributed to the overall success of the workshop. He cautioned them against being used to defame others through the media, warning that such actions could have serious consequences.
Comrade Waiya emphasized the importance of mutual respect and professionalism among political media commentators, regardless of their political affiliations, and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ethical standards and public enlightenment.
The Commissioner also expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for his approval and support toward the successful hosting of the workshop.
During the workshop, several thought-provoking papers were presented, including:Alkali Abdullahi Abdu Wariya, who spoke on “Tsokaci a kan Hukunce-Hukunce Kotu Dangane da Kafuwan Batanci” (Commentary on Court Judgments Regarding Platforms of Defamation); Professor Nuhu Idris, who delivered a presentation titled “Staying Within the Lines: Legal Boundaries, Defamation Laws, and Penalties in Political Broadcasting”; and Dr. Saminu Umar Rijiyar Zaki, who presented a paper on “Radio Political Programming in Kano: An Independent Assessment.”
As part of the ceremony, the Gauta Club presented the 2025 Award of Honour to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in recognition of his distinguished service and dedication to the development of Kano State.
The Gauta Club also presented an Award of Honour to Commissioner Waiya for reviving the club and in recognition of his leadership and service to the state.
The Commissioner later presented certificates of attendance to all participants of the workshop.
