WAIYA ADVOCATES GREATER ROLE FOR ACADEMICIANS IN STATE DEVELOPMENT
Kano State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has emphasized the crucial role of academicians in providing informed guidance for the state’s progress, ensuring Kano maintains its leadership position in Northern Nigeria.
The Commissioner made this remark while receiving members of the Forum of Progressive Academics during a courtesy visit to his office.
Comrade Waiya expressed concern over the underutilization of the vast knowledge and expertise available in Kano’s tertiary institutions. He stressed the need for scholars to actively contribute to governance, public enlightenment, and shaping the state’s direction. According to him, Kano is at a critical juncture that demands intellectual guidance from knowledgeable individuals.
He also lamented the growing influence of less-educated individuals in steering public opinion, particularly through radio Programmes and social media platforms, often misleading the populace.
He urged respected academics not to remain silent on key issues for fear of criticism but to speak out and guide society positively.
Drawing inspiration from revered leaders like Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello (Sardauna), and Malam Aminu Kano, the Commissioner noted that their enduring legacies were built on their commitment to truth and national development.
He, therefore, called on the Forum to support the state government in information dissemination, civic education, and promoting values of respect and unity among the people.
In his remarks, Dr. Abubakar Isah Ibrahim, President of the Forum of Progressive Academics, stated that the Forum, established a few months ago, comprises academic professionals from all tertiary institutions in Kano.
He assured the Commissioner of their readiness to collaborate with the state government in disseminating information and supporting policies that enhance the welfare of Kano’s people.
